Shenzhen residents who stayed at home during the May Day holidays were the backbone of moderate sales achieved by major shops and restaurants during the period.
Lin Guohui, a manager with Shirble's store in Jingtian Road South, said its sales doubled May 1 over the same day last year.
"As more people chose to stay at home, we had a larger inflow of shoppers this year," Lin said.
At Vanguard's store in Chunfeng Road May 4, many people shopped for food and daily necessities in its supermarket on the first and second floor despite the bad weather. A manager said the fear of SARS had a limited impact on this sector as people who stayed sustained sales. "But other sectors would be influenced," he said.
Yao Niming, a manager on duty with the Rainbow Department Store, said its sales were better than expected. He estimated the total turnover would be only 10 percent lower than the same period last year. "Although fewer people came, they bought more at one time," the manager said.
