The annual conference for China's senior Internet researchers, operators, and officials was held today (Friday) in Beijing. At a forum aimed at promoting the healthy and rapid development of China's Internet industry, participants called for greater social responsibility on the Internet.
It is now nine years since China became officially involved in the online industry. As the newest form of media, the Internet has entered the lives of an increasing number of people. The latest survey from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) in June showed that the number of China's netizens now totals about 68 million, and that there are about 470 thousand web sites in the country.
But Internet content still remains difficult to regulate, and there are no well-established laws in place to supervise Internet operators. As a result, inaccurate information, obscenity, superstition, incitements to violence, and false news threaten to disrupt the social order. Experts and officials at the forum expressed their concern over this recent phenomena.
