2006 marks 70 years since the Long March of the Chinese workers' and peasants' Red Army. And, to celebrate the anniversary, activities are being held across the country.

Next week, China Central Television will premiere a 20-episode drama, "Grand Pass". The production was created by the People's Liberation Army Film Studio - and focuses on the Second and Sixth Front Armies of the Red Army on the Long March. Led by generals He Long, Ren Bishi, and Guan Xiangying, the troops conquered mountains and trudged through swamps, all the while under threat from reactionary forces. In addition to the TV series, a Long March feature film and a documentary, are due for release later this month.

And in Shanghai, a group of stamp collectors has mounted a Long March exhibition. They've gathered virtually every postage stamp commemorating the journey, from more than half a century. The earliest was issued in 1948, before the founding of the People's Republic. And many other rare stamps are on display. The exhibition will tour colleges, in and around Shanghai, during the weeks to come.
