Q: As we all know, ICCFED is regarded as the name card of Guangdong province.

According to your point of view, what is Guangdong going to present in ICCFED?

A: In order to seek economic development, Guangdong has to put itself into the pattern of international economy and to take part in the competition of the international community. In ICCFED Guangdong is going to showcase a sort of international eyesight, potentiality and direction of future development.

Q: ICCFED is always thought as "Guangdong Fortune Forum". How do you think about it?

A: To some extent, these two conferences share a common ground in terms of taking care of the sustainability of economic development and fortune increase. In addition, however, ICCFED is also involved in a chain of reactions, from social evolution to cultural effect to enhancement of international influence.

Q: 2003 witnesses a great change in Guangdong. Can you talk in detail about the changes Guangdong has experienced during such a short period from 1999 to 2003?

A: Comparing the situation of 1999 with that of 2003, I have totally different feelings. 1999's ICCFED is mainly concerned about how to come out of the shadow of the financial crisis in 1997 and 1998, while 2003's conference focuses on how to seek development. In order to make sustainable progress in economy, Guangdong has to follow the direction of new-type industrialization, which is characterized by new industrial structure and awareness of international market.

Q: Can you explain to us what 'international competitive power' is?

A: From the angle of sociology, international competitive power can be defined as a company or an enterprise's capability of enhancement and sustainable development in the pattern of world economy.

Q: What do you personally expect Professor Lucas to bring to Sun YAT-Sen University this time?

A: I hope that our two universities are able to undergo further cooperation in terms of exchange of professors and students and enjoyment of intellectual resources.

Q: You may notice that among the 21 foreign advisors, 8 come from America, while 11 from Europe. What do these figures indicate?

A: Both America and Europe have a rich experience in the development of modernization. Their advices will be of much value to us.

Q: According to your point of view, what sort of attitude should Guangdong government take for the advices on development put force by the foreign advisors?

A: I personally believe that Guangdong government should deal well with the relationship of suggesting and decision-making. Foreign advisors bring us their precious advices while Guangdong has to make a final decision by itself on the direction of economic development after having seriously taken into consideration Guangdong's actual situation.

Q: What has Sun YAT-Sen University benefited from the first ICCFED?

A: The first ICCFED has brought to Sun YAT-Sen University an opportunity of cooperating with Oxford University in the program of training advanced managerial Cantonese civil servants. After having been trained in Sun Yat-Sen University for 3 months and in Oxford University for one month, trainees may be awarded a course-completed certificate with the signatures of both presidents. Undoubtedly, this cooperation has set up a good example for other universities throughout the country.
