Latest Updated by 2003-11-07 18:11:19

Mr. Paliwal in the interview

As a "world factory", Guangdong should establish more research and development centers, which is the core of Guangdong's value chain improvement, says Dinesh C. Paliwal, Executive Vice President and Member of the Group Executive Committee of ABB Ltd., Switzerland Head of ABB Automation Technologies Division.

"We are planning to expand our investment in Guangdong." He tells reporters when receiving interviews with Southcn.com (Chinese version for newsgd.com) and Guangdong Radio on November 2nd, 2003.

Research & development: key to whole value chain of GD

Q: What advices and projects do you bring to Guangdong?

A: As we all know, Guangdong has been a famous "world factory" now in addition to the front gate of China's market. Anyway, facing the international competition in future, Guangdong needs to make full use of its own advantages. The key is to attract and establish more research & development centers.

The "research and development" here refers to aspects as engineering power, designs, logistics, storage, sales and services, etc. At the same time, further research and development will bring both techniques and professional skills to Guangdong.

Q: Could you introduce the situation of ABB's current investment in Guangdong?

A: At present, our investment in China is mainly in the sector of manufacturing and development of new products, and our total investment in Guangdong is up to nearly 100 million USD.

The biggest project of ABB in Guangdong is a circuit for power transmissions from the Three Gorges to Guangdong. We are also planning to take part in some transportation programs as well as some large manufacturing projects.

ABB has totally five companies in Guangdong. We have already begun our research and development programs in the company of Xinhui City, where a team from the Sweden Research & Development Center stays permanently for developing switch products for low-voltage electrical appliances.

Keys to raising international competitiveness of enterprises

Q: According to your experience, how can Guangdong's enterprises grow into world-class ones?

A: These enterprises need to have world-class competitiveness. First thing first, they should be located in a place with good infrastructure and environment. Guangdong is definitely a right choice for them. Then there are some more advices for their further development:

  1. A well-developed resource system is of great significance for development of all fields and industries.
  2. To improve the transparency of operations as well as the equality of market competitions.
  3. To attract more multinationals to research and develop in Guangdong.
