HONG KONG universities would enroll more students from the Chinese mainland this year, Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday (June 7th).
The Hong Kong SAR Government has approved eight universities to recruit over 1,400 students outside Hong Kong, 2 percent higher than last year. Most of the students will be from the mainland.
Over 4,700 mainland students have applied for the Hong Kong University while only 250 vacancies are available. The university is offering a HK$100,000 (US$12,820) scholarship for each outstanding student every year.
It is the first time the Chinese University of Hong Kong and City University of Hong Kong will recruit students from the mainland through the National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE). Both universities offer scholarships.
The applicants for Hong Kong universities are required to take the NCEE, with their scores above the enrollment scores for the elite mainland universities. Outstanding English scores and interview results are also required.
Every student from the mainland will have to pay over HK$400,000 in tuition fees and living expenses in four years. Only very few outstanding students can get the scholarship.
