About 100,000 posters promoting Guangzhou's bid to host the 2010 Asian Games hit the streets yesterday (Jun 30), the day before the announcement of the name of the host city.

The posters were placed in bus stations, at traffic terminals and culture venues to reinforce Guangzhou's enthusiasm for the Games.

Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua departed for the capital of Qatar, Hoha, Tuesday  (June 29th) for the expected announcement of Guangzhou as the host of the 2010 Asian Games.

Mr. Huang's delegation, which also includes State Sports General Administration director Yuan Weimin, will address the Olympic Council of Asia on Guangzhou's blueprint for the Games.

Guangzhou is now the only candidate after the withdrawal of the other contenders, including Malaysia, South Korea and Jordan.

The city plans to celebrate the announcement this evening with a fireworks display on the Pearl River if Guangzhou wins the bidding.

The vote was expected to begin at 7:30 p.m. Beijing Time and the announcement would be made at 8:30 p.m, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

Guangzhou is now expected to apply for central government approval for a series of large-scale projects. Mr. Zhang was quoted by the Information Times as saying the city would spend about 220 billion yuan in the run-up to the 2010 event to improve infrastructure, build an athletes' village, a new railway station, as well as completing the second phase of the new Baiyun international Airport.
