A cargo train from Hong Kong crossing new Luohu Bridge
A cargo train heading for the Shenzhen North Railway Station from Hong Kong crossed the new Luohu Bridge at 6:52 a.m. Sunday (Jun 20), marking the official opening of the bridge.
Work on the new bridge, 48 meters long and 20 meters wide, started Oct. 20, 2003.
Shenzhen and Hong Kong jointly spent 23 million yuan (US$2.78) on the bridge. The two-way railway bridge, spanning the Shenzhen River, allows trains to travel at speeds up to 120km per hour.
The former 100-year-old Luohu Bridge has been moved to the Hong Kong side to be exhibited as a cultural relic.
The century-old bridge played a key role in connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong, as the only rail gateway linking the mainland and Hong Kong.
A new pedestrian bridge will also be built to make it easier for people to travel between Hong Kong and Shenzhen through the Luohu Checkpoint.
The checkpoint now witnesses an average daily passenger flow of more than 250,000 or 350,000 during holidays, statistics show.
