China's female sailor Xu Lijia on Tuesday won the gold medal in the Laser Radial open of the sailing competition at the 15th Doha Asian Games.

After the final race of the event on Tuesday on the open sea ofDoha Bay, Xu, 19, ranked first in the Laser Radial open class witha two-point lead over her male rival Kon Seng Leong from Singapore,who won the silver medal of the event.

"I told myself time and time again I have to compete like a male athlete," said Xu, who is the only female in the open class.

"I'm very proud of myself that I won the gold in the competition with male sailors," Xu told reporters Tuesday afternoon at the Doha Sailing Club after returning from the competition course at Doha Bay.

Indian sailor Rajesh Choudhary took the bronze.
