Olympic champion Yang Jinghui, who won a gold medal in men's synchronized 10m platform Sunday (Aug. 15) with Tian Liang, was recruited by Guangdong's Sun Yat-sen University, the Southern Metropolitan News reported Tuesday (Aug. 17).
He will start life on campus in September at the School of Political Science and Public Administration, the report said.
"Winning his championship was delightful, but it is even more cheerful to receive his recruitment paper," Yang's 60-year-old mother said, all smiles, after receiving the admission advice from Chen Weilin, deputy Party chief of the university committee of the CPC.
Yang, 21, a Guangzhou native, is the youngest in a family of five children.
Chen said Yang would have a flexible credit system to accommodate his training and competition.
Yang started to learn diving at the age of seven and entered the Chinese national diving team in 2002. He was also a winner in synchronized diving at the 14th FINA Diving World Cup 2004.
There are another four students from the university competing at the Athens Olympics, including Dong Zhaozhi, Wu Hanxiong and Zhou Hanming in men's fencing, and Lu Yingna in women's rhythmic gymnastics.
