Greece beats Puerto Rico for fifth place in men's basketball
Latest Updated by 2004-08-29 15:41:24

The host Greece beat Puerto Rico twice in a row to win the fifth place in the Athens Olympic men's basketball tournament on Saturday(Aug 28).

With the 85-75 victory, the Greeks concluded the tournament with four wins against three losses, matching their best Olympic finish set at the Atlanta Games in 1996.

Puerto Rico, who upset the Dream Team of the United States 92-73 in the opener, could be satisfied with its best finish since the Munich Games in 1972, when it also placed sixth.

Cheered on by 14,500 home fans, the Greeks, who had beaten Puerto Rico 78-58 in the preliminaries, pulled away from a 6-6 draw for a 25-15 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Michail Kakiouzis led Greece with 20 points.

Earlier on Saturday, European runner-up Spain beat Asian champion China 92-76 for the seventh place.

The bronze medal match and the final of the men's basketball will be played later on Saturday.
