Test flights for new GZ airport
Latest Updated by 2004-05-18 10:12:30

Two test flights will be conducted at the Gaungzhou New Baiyun International Airport in Huadu District on Tuesday (May 19), the Southern Metropolitan News reported Monday.

A twinjet Boeing 777 from China Southern Airlines will be used in the two tests to be held from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.. The timetable was scheduled to avoid peak air traffic times, an airport spokesman said.

The plane will take off at 6 a.m. from the existing airport and land at the new airport after all flight procedures have been initiated. Tests on the runway and passenger boarding will be conducted after the landing, the spokesman said.

The airport will hold a press conference on the results of the initial tests, and then a drill will be enacted to test the fire alarm system. Tests on fueling capability and efficiency will also be tested in the morning before the Boeing 777 returns to the old airport.

The second test flight in the evening will be mainly to test the landing lights at the airport.

The new airport was tested last November and earlier this month using an aircraft from the Civil Aviation Administration of China which had been specifically designed for airport testing. The airport had passed both tests, the spokesman said.

Located in Huadu City, the new airport will cover an area of 1,456 hectares, about four times the size of the existing Baiyun Airport, which is situated in the suburbs of Guangzhou and has long been overburdened by increasing passengers and cargo. The new airport is expected to open on June 28 this year.
