Deals sealed on the road

The 94th China Export Commodities Fair has seen a number of deals closed on buses shuttling between the two exhibition centers.

The fair, held every spring and autumn in Guangzhou, also known as the Canton Fair, opened a new exhibition center in Pazhou last week in addition to the main one in Liuhua Road. Exhibitors were busy shuttling between the two places, the Information Times reported.

On Saturday (October 25th), fair organizers began operating free shuttle buses departing every half hour, the newspaper said.

A jewelry dealer from Fujian Province, a Mr. Zhang, reached an initial agreement on the 15-minute journey Sunday (October 26th), the newspaper said.

In fluent English, Zhang spoke with a Middle East trader sitting next to him and displayed samples. The trader then agreed to visit Zhang's booth. Tiredness from rushing between the two centers was not a matter, as a sharp increase in transactions was achieved, he said.

Zhang came up with the idea to promote his business on the buses when he accompanied overseas dealers to the new center because his small booth at the main center was not attracting visitors.

Christmas gifts were popular among overseas visitors, the newspaper said. Some buyers said they did not attend the spring fair because of the SARS virus. They now wanted to make up for lost business. With the Christmas holidays approaching in Western countries, many traders needed quick delivery and some even offered to go to factories immediately to arrange shipment.

It was estimated that Monday's (October 27th) attendance would reach more than 130,000. The fair will close Thursday (October 30th).
