Shenzhen awarded more than 100 war veterans and family members of deceased veterans medals of honor Friday.
The ceremony was held as part of the city's commemorative activities marking the 60th anniversary of the victory of the war against Japanese aggression.
Li Hongzhong, secretary of the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC, said the Party and people wouldn't forget significant contributions the Dongjiang Guerilla Force (DGF) soldiers had made to the war against Japanese aggression in South China.
Li said the 1,500-plus soldiers with the DGF fought over 14,000 battles, killed or wounded over 6,000 Japanese soldiers and captured over 500 in the war.
Although all the veterans had retired, they were still teaching young students in the city about the period, Li said.
He Ji, a DGF veteran, said more than 70,000 Japanese soldiers invaded the Daya Bay in 1938 and many places, including the present Bao'an International Airport, Xiaomeisha beach resort and Fairy Lake Botanical Garden, were battlegrounds for DGF soldiers against the Japanese.
