Central govt affirms HKSAR govt's work: Tung
Latest Updated by 2004-12-21 10:11:11

The central government has affirmed what the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government has done, said Chief Executive of HKSAR Tung Chee Hwa in Hong Kong Monday (Dec. 20).

After Tung met with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Macao earlier Monday, he returned to Hong Kong and made the remarks at a press conference.

Tung said that Hu cares much about Hong Kong affairs. He considers that Hong Kong in general has been developing on a soundtrack.

Hu also encouraged the HKSAR government and Hong Kong citizens to join together in unity and take concerted efforts to continue to consolidate development in Hong Kong in the interest of Hong Kong's long-term interest and the country's interest, Tung said.

Tung said he reported to Hu that Hong Kong's economy is moving forward, though further enhancement is still needed. Thus, the paramount task of the HKSAR government is to consolidate the achievements, develop the economy and improve people's livelihood.

"In this regard, I also explained the importance of deepening the functions of four pillar industries of banking, logistics, tourism and business services, as well as the importance of further strengthening the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) between the mainland and Hong Kong and promoting Pan-Pearl River Delta's co-operation," Tung said.

"We need the continued support of the central authorities and the President agreed with my analysis of the above fundamental situation and the major direction of my work," Tung said.

He added that Hu also reminded him and the principal officials of the government that their governance must be people-oriented, they must consolidate experience, identify inadequacies and further improve their governance.

"I feel that President Hu's advice is important, and we will make every effort to do a better job," Tung said.
