Elias Ayuso scored 27 points, nine in overtime, and Carlos Arroyo added 25 in a scoring duel with China's Yao. Arroyo and Yao entered the game as the tournament's top scorers.
Daniel Santiago had 14 points, 10 in the fourth quarter and overtime for Puerto Rico (2-1), which has won two straight after losing to the United States in its opener.
China (0-3) led by 11 early in the fourth quarter and was still up two when Yao fouled out with 4:40 left in regulation. But the Chinese had only one more field goal in regulation and allowed the first six points in overtime.
