China has some extraordinary lakes and Huizhou's West Lake, being on a par with Hangzhou's West Lake, is no exception. You could need to set aside some time if you really want to explore this spot as it consists of 5 lakes, 6 adjoining bridges and 10 particular spots to look out for. The site that most head for is Huizhou's oldest building, the Sizhou Pagoda. Built during the Tang Dynasty, this octagonal pagoda, consisting of 7 floors, was destroyed in 1564 and rebuilt in 1618.
West Lake also provides a sanctuary for many different types of bird which nest on the many islets on it so take a pair of binoculars to get close up to the action.
