Affected by astronomical tides, water level of the Pearl River reached the highest point of this year. The peak arrived at 14:10 and the highest water level, recorded by Zhongda Hydrologic Station, was 2.24 meters, 0.74 meter above the 1.5-meter warning line. Water flooded the platform near Nanfang Building on Yanjiang Road, where some adults and children played in the knee-deep water.
According to the flood prevention agencies, the water level of all the hydrologic stations of Pearl River in Guangzhou section except Nansha Station, e.g. Dashi, Huangpu, Yagang and Modiesha stations, exceeded the warning line. Until five o'clock in the afternoon, the tide receded and the water level of the Pearl River went down.
Astronomers said that at 18:54 August 9, the moon and sun aligned with the earth and caused a syzygy tide, at 2:00am August 11, the moon came to its closest point to Earth, 359,749 kilometers away, which is 50, 000 kilometers nearer than the distance when the moon is at its furthest point and a Perigean tide was formed. Owing to the two astronomical tides and the increased water flow from the upstream of Xijiang River and Beijiang River, the tidal height of the Pearl River reached the highest level in the section in Guangzhou.
