Ling Bai, translated as "White Spirit", was born on October 10, 1970, in Sichuan province of China. Her father was a musician and her mother was an actress. She was primarily raised by her grandmother. At the age of 14, she she was enrolled by the People's Liberation Army in Tibet, where she served as a performer.
After Ling Bai was away from Army, she joined a theater group in Beijing. Ling began receiving small roles in Chinese films, and in 1988 when she was 18 years old, Ling starred in Hu Guang, and attended the film's screening at the Moscow Film Festival.
Ling traveled to New York City at the age of 21 to study at New York University's Department of Film and to enroll at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute.
Her American film debut was for THE CROW, as memorable bad girl Myca, a character wearing fetish wear and intrigued by human eyeballs. She auditioned for HEAVEN & EARTH, an Oliver Stone film, who finally hired her for another project, NIXON, as she played Nixon's interpreter during his famous visit to China. Then, came RED CORNER and the cause of more controversy.
Afterward, She continued to receive steady work in supporting roles, appearing in Wild Wild West, Anna and the King, and the made-for-TV drama Point of Origin. In her private life, Ling has been linked romantically with stylish rock singer Chris Isaak.
In 2004, Ling Bai won the title of Best Supporting Actress of the 24th Hong Kong Film Awards for the horror film "Dumplings".
