New signs to be set up at 1,000 road intersections by the end of 2007
Latest Updated by 2007-05-28 14:30:53

A survey showed that Guangzhou's new road signs were welcomed by most citizens. Though only ten new signs have been set up at road intersections near the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the municipal government office building, 47.62% of voting citizens said that they had made use of the new signs and 84.53% of the voters said that the new signs were "accurate and efficient."

1,085 sets of pedestrian signs are to be set up at over 1,000 intersections along 23 main roads, such as Dongfeng Road, Huanshi Road, Zhongshan Road, Jiefang Road, and Yanjiang Road. The new traffic sign system for the whole city will be completed before the 2010 Asian Games, to provide high-quality, convenient and clear guidance for tourists from China and abroad.

The signs are theft-proof and can point in eight different directions. Below each sign there is a map showing its location.

For the proposal of adding street numbers along certain roads, governmental agencies on urban utilities said that it would be considered in long-term plans. To completely resolve the problems caused by inappropriate street number placement and to further standardize street number management, Guangzhou will soon launch the "Street Numbers Management and Implementation Plan".

In addition, the city's Public Security Bureau is installing new street number plates in the eight old urban areas.
