Sculptural works for the central square of the Zhujiang New Town

The 2006 Guangzhou City Public Art -- Urban Sculpture Forum, jointly organized by the National Urban Sculpture Steering Committee and Guangzhou Municipal Government, opened yesterday.

At the forum, 28 winning designs for sculptural works for the south square of the People's Park and the central square of the Zhujiang New Town were unveiled. The winning designs were selected from 106 designs submitted by amateur designers from all over the country.

The winning amateur designs were put on display alongside professional designs. Experts commented that despite the gap between amateur and professional designs, the level of skill demonstrated by the amateur designers was quite impressive.

In recent years, Guangzhou has attached great importance to the design and construction of urban sculptures, with the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee and Guangzhou Municipal Government launching the Guangzhou Urban Sculpture Project. As a result, a number of urban sculptures reflecting local culture, history and customs have been built at prime locations such as Shangxiajiu and Shamian.

Local authorities have also increased funding for the construction of large-scale urban sculptures, with RMB 100 million earmarked for each of the first years the project. They are currently inviting interested parties to tender for design contracts for urban sculptures and public artworks for major public buildings and prime locations such as the Convention and Exhibition Center, the new Sports Center, and Nansha entrance.
