Guangzhou is to add screen doors to all platforms of the Line 1 underground stations. This biggest screen door project in China will kick off in Oct this year and is estimated to finish by 2008, with a total investment of 148.4 million yuan (about 17.92 million USD).

Adding screen door aims to prevent the passengers from falling onto the rail and to save the energy used in air conditioning by reducing the air flow between platform and the rails.

Besides adding screen door, the project also include the upgrade of air flow controlling system, lighting system, platform decoration, signal system, communication system, sewage system, fire system, BAS (Building Automation System) and FAS (Fire Alarm System).

For most of the work involved in the project will be done from 1am to 4am after the operation, so Line 1 will operate as usual during the project.

The project teams choose different screen doors for different stations considering the stations' different platform structure and ventilating system. All together, there will be three types of screen doors, say full-height, full-height with curved top and half-height.
