Russia on Monday asked Britain to deprive a Russian multimillionaire in exile in London of political refugee status and to extradite him back to Russia to face charges of fraud, local media reported.
"We have asked our British colleagues to give a legal evaluation of Boris Berezovsky's statements and reconsider the issue of depriving him of his political refugee status (by Britain) ... We have demanded his extradition," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted Prosecutor General Yury Chaika as saying.
The Prosecutor General's Office has completed the investigation of a fraud case against Berezovsky who was accused of stealing from funds of Russia's largest air company Aeroflot, Chaika said.
In the late 1990s, Berezovsky was accused of forging two companies in Switzerland to divert Aeroflot's funds. He then settled in Britain and was granted political asylum in 2003.
Earlier this month, Berezovsky urged the overthrow of the political regime in Russia by force and the appeal was slashed by Russia.
At least five criminal cases against Berezovsky have been opened in Russia: two cases over actions aimed at a violent seizure of power, one over the Aeroflot money theft, one over the VAZ cars fraud and yet another over the illegal acquisition of a house and land plot in the Zhukovka health center in the Moscow region, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.
