Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Saturday (Feb 17) evening that the agenda of a trilateral summit due on Monday would be based on a two-state solution.
"We would like for the parties at this summit to acknowledge international agreements based on a two-state solution," Rice told reporters at a joint press conference with Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
Rice emphasized the importance of the idea of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, despite complications created by an emerging Palestinian government.
Rice, who arrived from Baghdad, is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday.
Livni reiterated that a Palestinian power-sharing agreement between Abbas and Hamas does not meet the requirements of the international community.
The international quartet - the United States, the European Union, the United Nations and Russia, has demanded that any Palestinian government recognize Israel, renounce violence and adhere to previous peace deals.
