Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday accepted Hamas's candidate, Mohamed Shubair as the new Prime Minister of the proposed Palestinian national unity government, official Palestinian sources said.
The sources said that Islamic Hamas movement had presented a list of nominees to lead the new government, adding that President Abbas decided to choose Shubair as the new premier.
Shubair, an academic professor and the president of the Islamic University of Gaza till 2005, met on Saturday night with Abbas. Shubair did not belong to any political faction, though close to Hamas.
Hamas movement has chosen Shubair to lead the new national unity government, which would replace the current Hamas-led one headed by current Prime Minister and senior Hamas leader Ismail Haneya.
Officials in Hamas movement had expected the new national unity government to be formed by the end of November, after the settlement of issues related to the distribution of portfolios and the political platform of the government.
