Iraq war still seen as a mistake by most Americans: poll

Despite the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida leader in Iraq, most Americans still believe that the Iraq war is a mistake, according to a CNN poll released on Tuesday.

Fifty-five percent of the respondents believed that the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 was an mistake, a figure unchanged from an April survey.

Meanwhile, 54 percent believed that the war was going either very badly or moderately badly, down from 60 percent in March, reflecting a slight optimism about the death of Zarqawi, who was killed by a U.S. airstrike north of Baghdad on Wednesday.

The poll also suggested that the American public was still split on whether to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.

Of those surveyed, 18 percent said they wanted U.S. forces to be brought home immediately, and 29 percent said they wanted the troops out of Iraq within a year.

The United States invaded Iraq in March 2003 on the allegations that Saddam Hussein's regime was developing weapons of mass destruction and was linked to al-Qaida. Both allegations have turned out to be baseless.

At present, about 130,000 U.S. troops remain stationed in Iraq and the U.S. death toll now stands at nearly 2,500. The Bush administration still refuses to set any timetable for withdrawal.
