Fire fighters have extinguished a fire that broke out at gymnasium under construction in Beijing University, venue of table tennis tournaments during next year's Beijing Olympic Games.
The gymnasium, located in northwest Beijing, caught fire a little before 8:14 a.m. on Monday, setting 1,000 square meters ablaze. No one was injured in the accident, the Beijing Fire Brigade said.
A spokesman with the brigade said they received an emergency call at 8:14 a.m., and immediately sent 17 fire engines to the site.
"The fire was basically quenched after 9:00 a.m. The firemen then entered the venue and found the fire caused no casualties."
The brigade is still investigating into the cause of the blaze, initially thought to be triggered by improper practices in the construction process.
The domed 26,900-square-meter gymnasium is one of the 11 new venues being built for next year's Olympic Games. Its construction started in September 2005. Upon completion in August this year, the gym will be able to hold 8,000 audience.
