The province put quality over quantity in economic development and produced 2596.855 billion yuan of GDP, up 14.1 percent while a series of energy consumption index went down.

The energy consumption dropped by 2.7 percent in the first half of last year and continued to go down in the second half, the final figures are not disclosed.

Healthy Development in 2006

--Economy of Guangdong experienced steady economic development

The provincial GDP reached 2596.855 billion yuan, up 14.1 percent, accounting for one-eighth of the total in China.

--Substantial step of building a new socialist countryside

Guangdong Government invested 14.6 billion yuan for rural development in 2006, up 20.6% year on year. Government also helped a total of 6.6 flood disasters move in new home before the end of last year, says Huang.

--The innovation ability saw new progress and the industrial sector continued to optimize their structure

High-tech industry production value is over 1500 billion yuan, up 30% year on year. The added value of nine pillar industry hit 772.7 billion yuan, and the added value of heavy industry account for 59.9%, up 3.6%.

--Regional development was more balanced, private economy and rural economy experienced rapid development

He says that the development of western and eastern regions as well as mountainous areas was accelerated. The five mountainous cities' GDP and budget revenue increased 17.6% and 27.8% respectively, 3.5% and 7.3% higher than the average of the province.

The export and import value break 500 billion USD. The export value reached 302 billion USD, up 26.8, accounting for 31.2 of the total in China.

--Key projects made a breakthrough
A total of 111 billion yuan were invested in 162 key projects. 38 projects were put into production or partly put into production, and 32 projects started construction.
