On the morning of June 1, Vice Mayor Chen Guo and officials of Guangzhou Municipal Forestry Department inspected the progress of phase II of the "Green Hills and Lands" program. From 2007 to 2010, nearly RMB two billion will be spend to ensure that program goals are achieved.
According to the Municipal Forestry Department, the four-year program consists of four major projects, a coastal shelterbelt project, "green homes" construction in rural areas, restoration of urban forest tracts and a flower seedlings industrial project. In all 54-sq-km of 'green areas' will be constructed, and 46-sq-kms of green areas will be upgraded.
In 2007, Guangzhou is to implement 55 "Green Projects", including industrial protection forests, dike forest belts, coastal shoal mangroves, "green homes" in rural area, road shelterbelts, fire routes, fire cisterns, biological Fire Belts, seedling/seed bases and flower/seedling industry projects. A total of 1,577 hectares of green space will be constructed or renewed. The construction involves the Urban Forestry Bureau, the Bureau of Agriculture, the Water Conservancy Bureau, and the Road Bureau of 11 districts and county-level cities outside Yuexiu District.
