Guangzhou's biggest energy consumers are now going through "examinations" that started on the 22nd.
An official from the Economic and Trade Committee of Guangzhou told the reporter that the city has set a clear conservation goal that by 2010, the energy consumption per 10,000 yuan of added value of major consuming enterprises in the whole city should drop by more than 16% from 2000.
Those who fail to do so "might be overhauled in advance in some serious cases". The Committee will also monitor 150 large energy-consuming companies in key industries such as iron and steel, electricity, petroleum, chemical products, construction materials and light textiles, and organize seven of them to set up pilot sites for energy auditing.
