More than 200 primary school students read ancient poems at an event at the city's Central Book City on Sunday, to celebrate the 12th World Book and Copyright Day, which fell on yesterday.

Shenzhen is holding more than 94 activities events until May 7 to mark the annual Book and Copyright Day, which was first held by the UNESCO in 1995. The events are designed to promote reading among city residents.

Most of the events, including exhibitions, book exchange event and free lectures, will be held in schools, communities and industrial parks with a high concentration of migrant workers. Further information and schedules can be obtained by calling 2399-2007.

Collections of books from Hong Kong and Macao will exhibited in Shenzhen Library for the first time during the period.

Some 10,000 books on literature, science, economics and social sciences will be given free to readers who visit the three book cities in Futian, Luohu and Nanshan districts on Monday and Tuesday.

April 23 is a important date for world literature, for on this date in 1616 Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died.

By celebrating this day throughout the world, the UNESCO seeks to pay a worldwide tribute to books and authors, as well as promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property rights.
