Guangzhou traffic police, today, announced plans to install traffic light control buttons at selected crossings.

At key crossings, pedestrians can now push a marked control button to activate a new pedestrian crossing traffic signal. When the steady green 'walk' figure is seen, pedestrians should check that auto traffic has stopped then cross the road quickly and carefully. The push button activates a 20 to 30 second crossing signal for pedestrians. After the crossing period traffic will move again after.

In 2000, the local traffic police installed the city's first two such traffic light push buttons on North Tianhe Road. By the end of 2006, more than 140 such buttons have been installed on 32 intersections.
