From today (March 1), Guangdong province begins water rationing in industrial, agricultural, public services and domestic water use and high prices will be charged for excess water use.

According to the Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province, after years of discussion the "Regulation for Water Rationing in Guangdong Province (Trial)" has been published and take effect for two years from March 1, 2007.

According to the Regulation, cities can be divided into six grades: Mega, Super, Large, Small and Town-level grades. The bigger the city, the higher the rationing will be adopted.

Using Guangzhou as an example; with more than nine million residents, it belongs to Super city grade. Therefore, its per capita water ration is 210 liters per day. A fluctuation of ±15% can be made according to the living standards of local residents, water conditions, weather conditions and other factors.

After two years, the final Regulation will be formulated, upon review.

At present, water shortage and the wastage of water both exist in Guangdong Province; water-saving awareness is limited. The wastage of water in some areas of Guangdong is serious, said an expert of the Water Resources Department of Guangdong Province. The utilization of water is insufficient. That is why Guangdong has enormous potential for water saving.

Water rationing is not an intervention to the water use of individuals, but a basic measure for the implementation of the water use license, he said.
