This mountainous city to the north of Guangdong Province, which is known for its sylvan surroundings and spectacular natural scenic spots, will further promote its tourism resources by organizing thousands of tours across the region this year.

Sources with the Shaoguan Tourism Association said it would work with local tourism agencies and the Family, a Guangzhou-based magazine, to organize a great number of tourists from more than 1 million households to visit the region.

An old industrial city in Guangdong, Shaoguan also boasts of abundant tourism resources, with the Danxia Mountain having been listed as one of the world-level geological parks.

A total of five routes in Shaoguan have been selected for the upcoming series of tourism events, according to the local tourism department.

The Danxia Mountain and the Nanhua Temple, one of the three major Buddhism temples in Guangdong, will be the top choice for tourists, who are in pursuit of health and fortune, said Chen Zhongyao, deputy director of the Shaoguan Tourism Bureau.

The Danxia Mountain has a special topographical feature, focusing on grand pinnacles, steep cliffs and stocks in China's laterite basins.

Built more than 1,000 years ago, the Nanhua Temple is the cradle where Master Monk Huineng, the sixth patriarch of Buddhist Zen Sect, carried forward the Buddhism doctrine.

The second route includes the Zhujiang Ancient Street and the Meiling Gateway in Nanxiong County, the Maba Man Relics in Qujiang and Hakka Earth Buildings.

"Many overseas Chinese, as well as people living in the Pearl River Delta region, are originated from the Zhujiang Ancient Street. This route will provide an opportunity for them to seek their families' roots," Chen said.

According to Chen, the rest of the routes feature some natural scenic spots, including the Ruyuan great Gorge and the Chebaling State Nature Protection Zone.

During the year-long event, the first group of visitors will start their tours in Shaoguan on the Women's Day.

"The tourism sector has seen rapid development over the last few years. And we will develop more routes that fit family members to visit during holidays," Chen said.

According to Chen, the city registered a tourism revenue of more than 200 million yuan ($25.6 million) during the last National Day holidays, receiving more than 480,000 visitors.
