Any employer who places a help-wanted ad in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, and makes a gender requirement in it will be fined, according to a new regulation.
When the regulation takes effect on Thursday (February 1), the fine will be no less than 1,000 yuan (US$128) and no more than 5,000 yuan ($641).
The local labor department drafted the new regulation in cooperation with the women's federation. Guangzhou has forbidden employers from firing any female employees because of marriage, pregnancy or breast-feeding.
