The opening ceremony of "the 1st Sessionof 13th Guangzhou People's Congress" was held at Sun Yat-sen's Memorial Hall on the morning of January 22, 2007 (yesterday). During the session, Standing Committee Members discussed topics of scientific development and harmonious society in Guangzhou.

Mayor of Guangzhou Mr. Zhang Guangning delivered "The Government Work Report", which brings forward Guangzhou's development objects for the next five years.

The GDP of Guangzhou is expected to rise by 12% in 2007. The city's GDP per capita will exceed 1.3 million US dollars and is expected to reach the level of medium-developed countries.

The government will improve the urban environment and develop Guangzhou ecologically.

Over the coming five years, supermarkets and mega-centers in downtown Guangzhou will use electronic labels for raw food.

Invested with 700 million yuan (about 90 million US dollars), a modernized central slaughterhouse of European Union's standards, will be put into use in a year and a half.

During 'the Eleventh Five-Year Plan' period, Guangzhou will set up an international famous shop district and international goods trade center.
