The Underground Radiation Treatment Centre for Tumor Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University held a foundation laying ceremony Saturday (Jan 20).
Vice Governor of Guangdong, Lei Yulan, attended the event. The construction will be finished and the centre will begin operation by the end of next year. By then, it will be Asia's largest underground radiation treatment centre treating 1,000 cancer patients every day.
Vice Director of Tumor Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Lu Taixiang, said that at the moment his hospital is able to receive about 600 to 700 patients per day, but actually more than 1,000 patients demand the service every day. He added that many patients have to wait three to four months for a radiation treatment.
