Guangzhou Government will invest 23.976 billion yuan (3.07 billion USD) in urban commutation and environment development this year, as announced in the Guangzhou City Construction Conference 2007 yesterday (Jan. 18), according to Information Times.

Improving Downtown Traffic
 
Construction of 2.5km-long Kangwang Under-lake Tunnel (below Liuhua Lake) will start in 2007. It is designed to have four lanes two-way, with traffic speed of 50-60 km/h, and involves some 520 million yuan (66.7 million USD). It will become the longest public tunnel in Guangzhou after the two-year construction.

Other key transportation projects include 19 roads constructions like Guangzhou Dadao, Dajinzhong Road, Bicun Crossroad and so on.

Old Town Renovation

Guangzhou Government is planning the old-town's sustainable development, like more maintenance and renovations of drainage system and 2.54 billion yuan (326 million USD) investment to construct 17 power switching stations.

More Constructions of Low-price Housing

More low-price housing will be built this year, to meet majority population's needs. The construction amount of small-and-medium-size housing will increase to 17% from the present 5% of supply total in property market.

Guangzhou will continue its environmental protection campaign of ' Lush Hills, Green Lands, Blue Sky and Clear Water', mainly targeting Zhujiang New City, Baiyun New City, Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center(so-called University Town), Guangzhou Science City, Guangzhou New City, and Nansha New City.
