This year Guangzhou will establish a new garbage incineration power plant that can handle 2,000 tons of garbage a day, said Lv Zhiyi, General Director of the Bureau of City Appearance, Environment and Sanitation of Guangzhou Municipality, on January 16.
In 2006, the urban areas of Guangzhou treated 3.243 million tons of household garbage, averaging 8,885 tons per day; the old urban areas treated a record high of 6,982 tons daily, representing an increase of 5.47 percent compared with last year.
The Likong Garbage Incineration Power Plant, with a daily handling capacity of 2,000 tons, will begin construction this year. The project, with a total investment of RMB 960 million, is expected to be put into operation in 2009. It will be the biggest power plant of its kind in China.
Moreover, the Bureau is planning to build another power plant that can handle 3,000 tons of garbage per day.
By 2010, 9,000 tons of garbage will be burned every day in Guangzhou to generate electricity, said Mr. Lv.
Last year, 11 temporary garbage stations were closed, and 43 garbage compressing stations were renewed and established. In 2007, the Bureau will renew 11 garbage compressing stations and establish 2 large-scale stations. More garbage-bin-carrying vehicles and sealed plastic garbage bins will be used. Leakage prevention technologies will be adapted on garbage compressing vehicles. Yuexiu district, with 63 garbage-bin-carrying vehicles and 8790 sealed plastic garbage bins, is expected to be the first district in Guangzhou and in China that collects all its household garbage by garbage-bin-carrying vehicles.
This year the environment of urban rural fringes, urban villages and rural areas is to be improved. Household garbage in 138 urban villages will be cleaned daily by the end of 2007.
