Fewer jams and accidents! Such is a Guangzhou resident's comment on the road traffic of the city after it banned motorcycles from Jan 1.

"I do not worry about motorcycle robbery as much as before", said Miss Li, a lady lived on Taihe road.

Statistics from the local traffic police authority shows the number of traffic accident caused by motorcycles sharply drops.

Traffic flow in main roads has been improved, such as Zhongshan Road and Jiefang Road.

Lin, a driver of Bus No.38, said after the ban, the bus has slightly more passengers.

The city has amended its bus routes before the ban to cover more residential areas, and more bus routes will be established, according to an official of the Guangzhou Communication Commission.

Following the ban, many residents who used to go to work by motorcycle, are now using bicycles.

The ban on motorcycles will curb emission of 24,000 tons of carbon monoxide, 300 tons of nitrogen oxide and 300 tons of particulates in the air every year, according to the statistics from the Environment Protection Bureau of Guangzhou.
