The awards presentation ceremony for the Third "Golden Dragon Original Animation and Comic Art Competition", dubbed the "Oscar of Chinese-language animation", will take place at the Guangzhou Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall on February 5. This event significantly enhances the status of Guangzhou's animation industry in China.
The Golden Dragon Awards are presented by Comic Fans and Comic World magazines in conjunction with other domestic and international organizations. Since their launch in 2004, the Awards have become the most prestigious in the animation industry, with an ever-expanding influence.
Guangzhou is the fourth city in China to have a national animation industry base, after Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. In 2005, several government agencies, including the Guangzhou Administration of Press, Publication, Radio and Television, with Guangzhou's Science and Technology Bureau, jointly released the Guidelines for Accelerating the Development of Guangzhou's Network Game and Animation Industry. The newly published Guangzhou Eleventh Five-Year Plan for the Modern Service Industry envisions an average annual growth of approximately 45% for the city's network game and animation industry over the next five years and an annual output value of RMB 7 billion by 2010.
In addition to the Golden Dragon Awards, the ceremony also presents awards to the winners of the Cosplay National Elite Invitational Tournament. As part of the event in Guangzhou, internationally renowned animators will take part in the "Global Animation Industry Cooperation and Development Forum" and prominent domestic and foreign animators will show off their skills in a large-scale animation demonstration.
The Third Golden Dragon Original Animation and Comic Art Competition is themed around "Love", with the slogan "It's love". According to the Director of the Organizing Committee, Jin Cheng, the competition has received more than 2,000 entries from around the world since January 2006, double the number of entries for the previous competitions. Entries were also received from Chinese in the US, UK, Canada, Malaysia, and Japan.
