After a sales ban lasting more than one month in Guangzhou, turbot returned to markets yesterday afternoon (Jan 7) with a 30 percent increase in price.
The first batch of turbot arrived at Huangsha aquatic product market. Because costs associated with transporting fish by air has increased, turbot is now 30 percent more expensive than before the ban, about 40 to 50 yuan per 500 grams.
Director of the Huangsha market, Chen Zhiyong, said that the resumed sales will follow various strict inspection procedures.
The turbot will first have to pass five tests including tests for Nitrofuran and ciprofloxacin. The market then will check if any chemicals still remain in the fish two to three times every month.
Venders say that if sales are good, they will consider transporting by land which will help lower the price.
