Senior citizens play drums at Lotus Hill Park in Shenzhen yesterday during a mountain-climbing ceremony aimed at promoting the city's bid to host the 2011 Summer Universiade.

More than 6,000 residents participated in the event, climbing to the top of the Lotus Hill. A team from the city's bid committee left Shenzhen yesterday for Turin, Italy, to prepare for the city's final push for the bid.

The host city will be announced following a vote by the International University Sports Federation in Turin on Jan. 16.
