New measures come into effect from today to make life easier for some foreigners needing residence permits to work in Shenzhen city.

Expats living in Nanshan will now be able to make a phone appointment for an interview at the Nanshan District Public Security Branch Bureau rather than turning up in person.

The exit and entry section of the branch bureau said that the appointment should be made within three days in advance, and the police will arrange the exact time for the interview.

Previously foreigners had to wait in a queue or even return another day for the interview, said the police.

After an initial monthlong trial period, those who don't make phone appointments beforehand may be refused an immediate interview, the police said.

If a company has five or more applicants, the employer may apply to the police for interviews to be held at the company's premises.

Foreigners can call police officers Madam Wu or Mr. Liu at 8446-6158 for an appointment during office hours. They can also send their postal applications to Room 205, the Exit and Entry Section, Nanshan Public Security Branch Bureau, 388 Shennan Thoroughfare, or e-mail to nscrj@21cn.com
