Guangzhou's Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Largest Gothic Stone Cathedral in China, will open to the public after Christmas upon completion of repair and maintenance.
As before, on Saturday and Sunday, the church will open to individual visitors, free of charge. From Monday to Friday, the church will be open to tour visitors, charging an admission fee. Sacred Heart Cathedral was designed by the French and built in 1863 by Chinese architects. In 1996, it was recognized as one of the National Key Cultural Relics under State-level Protection by the State Council. The repair project began in 2004 and cost 20 million yuan.
All the windows use a special and expensive glass made in the Philippines, and the mechanical clock has been re-installed in the church.
