Shenzhen tops other mainland cities in telecom services, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily said yesterday.

More than half of all local families have access to broadband, and there are 165 mobile phones for every 100 residents, with TV and radio signals covering every corner of the city, the Daily report said.

The manufacturing of wireless products has become a pillar industry in the city, according to Shi Yongqi, vice director of the city's wireless management committee.

In all, 351 wireless new products developed in Shenzhen applied for licenses in the first half of this year, of which 309 got the go-ahead, accounting for over a quarter of the national total.

Statistics revealed that the output from the wireless products industry earned 60 billion yuan (US$7.5 billion) in 2005, accounting for 20 percent of the output in the high-tech sector and 9 percent of the city's GDP.

Major wireless products in the city include base stations for mobile communication, mobile phones, microwave communication equipment and interphones.

The city government is investing 80.15 million yuan in the first phase of a digital wireless monitoring network starting this year. The network includes four monitoring stations on mountains, 30 fixed monitoring stations, four portable monitoring stations and a command center.
