On December 5, Qiu Baoxing, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Construction, opposed the practice by some cities of eliminating bicycle lanes in building city roads during the Working Meeting of Preferentially Developing Urban Public Transport. He demanded that all the new city roads (high-speed ring roads excluded) include bicycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks.
The principal of the Bureau of Urban Planning of Guangzhou Municipality said that all the new city roads in Guangzhou's new developed areas would include bicycle lanes and pedestrian sidewalks on the same level, and that the branch roads in old urban areas would gradually reset up bicycle lanes if possible. Tianhe Road N., Yuehua Road, Zhengnan Road and Cangbian Road currently have a 1.5-meter wide bicycle lane on both sides.
