Is it Canton or Guangzhou ?
A debate over the Guangdong provincial capital city's English name has been heating up among local residents and scholars in recent months.
Some residents argue Canton has a long history and is the only name by which many foreigners know the city.
But others argue that Canton is out of fashion and Guangzhou is the city's real name. Citing it as an example, they note that though the Chinese capital used to be called Peking, Beijing is now the city's standard English name.
