In Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, a large quantity of students signs up to join the army.  [Guangzhou Daily]

Yesterday morning, 5000 students from 10 universities in Guangzhou's Higher Education Mega Center signed up to join the army, according to Guangzhou Daily reports.

About 100 thousand people across Guangdong enrolled in the army on its first day of recruitment. The government expects more than 10% of this year's enrolment will be university students, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily.

Policy Favours University Students

University students planning a military career will receive financial assistance from the local government. In Haizhu district for example, students will receive an in-service allowance of 350 yuan per month, as well as a payment of 53,050 RMB at the conclusion of their service. Students who perform well in the army will be fast-tracked to officer traineeships.

Ex-servicemen Gain Free Occupational Training

Starting in 2006, Guangdong Government will reserve 300 million yuan per annum as military training funds. Every ex-serviceman will receive 10 thousand yuan for 2 or 3 years of occupational training and job skill guidance.
