According to an education conference held yesterday (Oct. 9), Guangdong plans to expand the coverage of the "free compulsory education policy". The new policy will benefit poor students from urban households. Beginning this school year,
Guangdong and local government allocate a total of 3.1 billion yuan to subsidize the free compulsory education program for rural students. 9.6 million Rural students in Guangdong will not have to pay for their schooling. Guangdong Education Department hopes to gradually increase the beneficiaries to groups including orphans, children from single-parents families and low-income families in the city.
